Lindy: Tulsa Blues Weekend

I broke my policy this past weekend and traveled for an all-blues event. I've done quite a number of these events the past few years, and recently I've been disappointed in my experience with these types of events (more on that in a follow-on post). I did have some fun experiences this past weekend, but I was certainly reminded of why I set this policy for myself...

I drove up to Dallas on Thursday night, and then drove the rest of the way with Jess after she got off of work. We stayed with Chris Ransdell. He has a nice large place in which he put in a nice sized wood floor to create a dance studio. It would be nice to set up something similar here in Austin.

We danced a little Friday night, but not a whole lot. I got up late on Saturday and missed the first class, which is unfortunate. I would be interested in seeing how Chris R goes about teaching his basic class. I took his second class and Mihai's two classes. I did get more out of these classes than I expected to, but not necessarily in the way the instructors intended. The dance and late night on Saturday was pretty boring for me, and I didn't dance much with many people. I showed up to the classes the next day, but didn't participate. Doing the tango classes would just frustrate me, because I don't know of any instructors outside of SF/Seattle/Portland/Denver that inspire me as far as Argentine Tango goes.

The two follows I was most looking forward to seeing and dancing with included Anna from Houston, and Chris Arneson from Denver. I did get to spend about as much time as I needed with both of these ladies. Chris and I had spent quite a bit of time together about this time last year, but not much since. It was good to catch up with her a little. Anna and I, on the other hand, haven't even had a real conversation before, in spite of dancing quite a bit at a number of events. It was really pleasant to finally have that opportunity. She's leaving for a year in Australia shortly, but she said she might move to Austin soon after she returns, which is certainly something to look forward to.

Even with the enjoyable parts, I'm not sure it was worth my traveling 17 hours for this. Especially since it was my last weekend before my Christmas break to get things done. Ah well.
